Roma artist, writer on Nazi atrocities, dies at 79

(AP) ? Ceija Stojka survived three Nazi death camps and then found her life's work: Raising awareness of the Nazis' persecution of Roma ? also known as Gypsies ? in her art and her writings.

Stojka carried the horrors of those camps with her until she was in her 50s, speaking out in words and pictures only decades after she was liberated from the Bergen-Belsen camp at age 12.

Her death Monday at age 79 in a Vienna hospital was announced by her publisher. The Budapest-based European Roma Cultural Foundation described Stokja's concentration-camp themed paintings to The Associated Press on Wednesday as reflecting "entrenched sorrow in the bodies and spirit of the victims."

Austrian Education and Culture Minister Claudia Schmied lauded Stojka's work in exposing Roma suffering under the Nazis, saying her advocacy gave rise to "hope that the oath 'Never Again!' is and will remain more than a historic promise."

Her family's persecution under the Nazis began in 1941 and ended four years later with Stojka's liberation from the Bergen-Belsen camp in Germany. While her mother and four siblings also survived, Stojka's father and brother were killed in Auschwitz, two of the more than 1 million Roma estimated to have been killed under Hitler. In all, nearly 200 members of her extended family perished under the Nazis.

Stojka kept those experiences to herself for decades at a time most Austrians embraced the popular notion that they and their nation were victims of Hitler instead of his willing accomplices.

"If I could write down all my thoughts, they would surely be an endless book of suffering," she told an interviewer before embarking on her 1988 autobiography "We Live in Seclusion." ''But my thoughts race more quickly than my hands are able to put everything to paper."

Born in Austria to a nomadic family of horse traders, Stojka returned after the end of the Nazi era and made a living selling carpets. She started speaking out in the 1980s, as Austrian awareness of the country's complicity in Nazi crimes grew. And she started painting ? dark somber pictures depicting the death camps that alternated with joyful images of pre-war life on the road in her family's horse-drawn wagon.

Despite those happier images, she never forgot the horrors of the Nazi era ? and implored audiences not to let history repeat itself.

"How is it possible at the beginning of the new century that the Roma population ... is still humiliated and maltreated ? and sometimes killed as it happened in Hungary ? for the only reason of being Roma?" she asked a gathering of Hungarian university and high-school students three years ago after a spate of Roma hate killings there.

"Let my grandchildren live," she declared.

PHOTOS: Prince Charles & Camilla Ride The London Tube!

It's not every day that a British royal hops on the tube -- would you bother with public transportation if you had a luxurious private car service at your disposal?

Some days, however, these nobles have photo opps to fulfill, which means we get to see them doing what the common folk do. Well, sort of. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the London tube, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall took a spin on the train. And by "spin," we mean they traveled one whole stop.

The royal couple caught the Metropolitan line at Farringdon station to King's Cross. And even though their journey was a mere three minutes, we have to give Charles extra points because he managed to swipe his very own Oyster card despite the fact that it was his first trip on the tube in 33 years (the last time he visited, he ended up driving the train instead). According to The Telegraph, Camilla probably took the train at some point in the more recent past.

Of course, they weren't just thrown on any old tube. Charles and Camilla rode on a brand new walk-through, air-conditioned train (swanky), which Camilla remarked was "very nice, very smart." Perhaps the transport system has a new pair of loyal customers?

But the best photo opp of the entire trip had to be when the pair stopped by "Platform 9 3/4" -- you know, where Harry Potter catches the Hogwarts Express. Very cute, guys, very cute. So while we're sure Charles and Camilla bathed themselves in Purell as soon as they stepped off the train, we'd say this was a successful "just like us" moment, wouldn't you?

Stellar performances finally gain the limelight

Michael Brooks, consultant

Beatrice-Yale-1976.jpg

(Image: Five Finger Yamanaka/courtesy of Phil Ross)

In Heart of Darkness, Jeremiah P. Ostriker and Simon Mitton add new stars to the constellation of astronomy to tell the subject's full history

WE HAVE all heard of the Hubble Space Telescope, named after Edwin Hubble, but where is the Tinsley telescope?

Beatrice Tinsley was an excellent astronomer, but her career was stymied by an establishment set against giving a salary to the wife of an academic - even if she was also a gifted scientist. Tinsley made at least two vital contributions to our understanding of the universe's history, but she had to divorce her husband and grant him custody of the children to get any recognition of her talents.

In Heart of Darkness, Jeremiah Ostriker and Simon Mitton explore modern cosmology while recasting what they term the "simple linear parade of heroes" of standard accounts. Among the uncelebrated stars of cosmology they discuss, Tinsley shines brightest, but there are others: Milton Humason, a poorly educated mule-driver and janitor who assisted Hubble in his observations, and Vesto Slipher, who, despite working in the shadow of a boss obsessed with finding evidence for Martian civilisations, made the first observations that told us about the expansion of the universe.

heart_of_darkness.jpg

Why do some names last and others fade? As well as being a great astronomer, Hubble was a "showman", and a "comfortable celebrity", say Ostriker and Mitton. Tinsley, meanwhile, was diagnosed with cancer the year she finally made full professor (at Yale). She died four years later, aged 40. Like a supernova, she burned brightly but briefly. Hopefully, this thorough and inspiring book will secure her a place in cosmological history.

Not that Ostriker and Mitton's book is focused solely on people - quite the opposite. Relatively few biographical details are given: it is their scientific contributions that are explored - and with aplomb.

This is a strong, confident book, easily one of the best guides to why cosmologists make the claims they do. Yet for all their redistribution of credit, the cosmology that the authors set out remains uncontroversial. It is the universe that began in a singularity, passed through a period of rapid inflation, and is now dominated by dark matter and dark energy. The state of our knowledge, they say, represents a "stunning" accomplishment.

This is the dilemma of modern cosmology: what counts as success? Summing up, Ostriker and Mitton simultaneously cite a "pretty impressive list of successes" while acknowledging that cosmology is "profoundly incomplete". We don't know what caused the inflation, what constitutes dark matter or what lies behind dark energy. In the end, the authors settle for a declaration that there's plenty for future cosmologists to do.

If there is one flaw in this crystal clear book, it's a lack of depth in the discussion of the dark side of the universe. It provides the book's title and is supposed to account for 96 per cent of the universe, but is confined to two chapters towards the end. Alternatives to dark matter are dismissed in little more than a paragraph and compared to pre-Copernican efforts to keep the Earth at the centre of the cosmos. When many respected scientists support the continued search for alternatives, that seems somewhat disingenuous.

Were she still with us, Tinsley would no doubt argue that there are compelling reasons to believe in the existence of dark matter, but that there are good reasons to consider alternatives, too. Her unique contribution to cosmology was to persuade a dismissive establishment that galaxies change their properties over time. In so doing, she exposed a gaping hole in the cosmology of the 1970s. It was a supreme achievement, if unwelcome.

Clearly, if you want your name to go down in history (or onto a telescope) it's better to be a showman than a troublemaker. But if the history of science teaches us anything, it's that the troublemakers should be celebrated too.

McCaskill takes to Twitter to lampoon Supreme Court Justice's hat

? January 21, 2013Posted in: U.S. Senate

? U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill took to Twitter after President Obama?s inauguration ceremony Monday afternoon to lampoon the unique headwear dawned by Antonin Scalia, an associate justice of the Supreme Court.

?Four years ago today I began tweeting. One of my first tweets was a comment on Scalia?s weird hat. Will he wear it again? Stay tuned,? McCasill said ahead of the ceremony.

After the ceremony, McCaskill gleefully reported back:

Brian Walsh, a former spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, noted that the headwear was a replica of a hat worn by St. Thomas More, given to Scalia during 2010 by the St. Thomas More Society of Richmond, Virginia.

This year?s inaugural ceremony marked four years since Missouri?s senior senator became a pioneer in the use of the social media platform by lawmakers.

64 Essential Tools for the Location Independent Entrepreneur ...

For a more in depth look at travel/business tools and resources, check out my free book Location Rebel Arsenal.

What kind of camera do you shoot your videos with? What sites do you use to book your airline tickets? How do you do your SEO research? What hosting do you use for your sites?

I get questions like this?all the time.

Because of this I?ve been thinking about building a resources page for a long time, but just haven?t got around to doing it. Until now.

Below you?re going to find my entire list of everything I use to help me live the Location Rebel lifestyle.

I tried to be as thorough as I could with this. Still curious about a tool or something I use? Leave a comment and let me know, and I?ll update the post. ?Something I should be using? Tell me about those too!

With that, there?s a lot to cover, so let?s jump in.

Basic Web Essentials

Basic Hosting -?One of the few things here?that is a non-negotiable, must have thing if you want to be a location rebel. ?I used Fat Cow for three years due to their good customer service. ?These days however, I recommend Dreamhost.

Upgraded Hosting -?For a little bit more money you can get a VPS solution ? totally worth it in the long run. ?If you?re technically inclined (or work with someone who is) Linode is about as good as it gets, and is what I use. ?For usability however, Dreamhost?VPS is still a good bet here.

WordPress ? The CMS I use to run ALL of my websites. ?Want a blog? Use WordPress. Building an E-commerce store? WordPress can do that. Membership site? Check. Best of all? It?s free and has an unbelievable support community behind it.

Google Analytics ? Essential for figuring out what?s working and what isn?t. ?Also free, so there?s no excuse for not taking 3 minutes to install on your site. ?You can get info about how people are finding your site, where they?re from, and what your most popular pages are ? and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Cyberduck ? Open source FTP client. ?This allows you to access all of your website?s folders and files. You?ll need this at some point, I promise. ?FileZilla is also a similar program that I use.

Travel

I use a bunch of different travel sites and services depending on what I?m looking for.

Expedia ? For booking flights and hotels in the US, I almost always end up booking through Expedia. ?Also, if you?re going to some place like Vegas and need a hotel and flight, their package deals can be very good.

Skyscanner ? The travel aggregator to end all travel aggregators. ?Searches 1,000 airlines to help you find the best flights.

Vayama ? When flying from the US to Asia, Vayama repeatedly has the best prices.

Agoda ? The very best website for booking hotels in Asia.

AirBnb ? Hotels too expensive where you?re going? Get bigger apartments, in better locations, for less money.

Couchsurfing ? Still don?t feel like paying? Then head to Couchsurfing and find a place to crash. I know people that have traveled all over the world without paying a dime on lodging.

Tripit Pro ? Been using this for a few months and absolutely love it. ?All of my travel info in one nice, easy to access place. ?Not to mention the flight updates are great.

Online Marketing

Aweber. Your email marketing solution is one of the most important services you can can have. ?I highly recommend this over similar services such as Mailchimp for it?s robust feature set and high deliverability rates.

Wishlist Member ? There are a lot of WordPress membership plugins out there, but this is the one I use for all of my clients and my personal online membership sites.

OptimizePress ? A WordPress theme that makes it dead simple to create sales pages, launch funnels, and a membership backend. What Location Rebel is built on.

Thesis ? If you?re willing to get your hands a little dirty with the technicalities, Thesis is pretty much the most robust theme/framework for WordPress. ?Location 180 is built on Thesis.

Woo Themes - Dozens of high quality, easy to manage WordPress themes. ?When doing client work, I usually recommend they start with Woo Themes when looking to change up their website. ?Here?s a recent example.

iDevAffiliate ? There are a lot of solutions out there for?affiliate?programs. ?Use E-junkie if you?re just starting out, but I like the feature set and price point of iDevAffiliate so it?s what I chose for LR.

Office Autopilot?-?For as great as Aweber has been, I?m considering?making?the switch to Office Autopilot because the service (while expensive) takes the place of Wishlist, iDevAffiliate, and Aweber. ?Anytime you can bring everything under one umbrella, the better.

Other Great Web Tools

I realized I use a lot of things that don?t necessarily fit into any of the other categories, but are just as important.

SpeedTest?- Incredibly useful when traveling and trying to get a sense of whether or not the internet is actually manageable. ?I?ll often open up the app on my phone, connect to wifi and test the internet speed before booking a room if I?m in travel mode.

Lastpass?- Easily get access to all of your passwords in a very secure way.

Astrill VPN?- If you?re in certain countries (like China) good luck getting on any social media sites without a VPN. ?All of my friends over there swear by Astrill. ?They also have a free one week trial ? so check it out. ?Even if you aren?t in China, I recommend using this for the sake of security.

Prey?- Track your stolen laptop or phone as soon as it?s connected to the internet. Remote wipe all of the data. ?If your stuff gets stolen, this is your best chance of finding it.

Skype Call Recorder?- Super simple app for Skype that allows you to record your conversations. ?Great if you?re doing interviews.

Caffeine?- Mac only app that simply keeps your computer from going to sleep. Easy to toggle on and off, and is perfect when you?re doing things like webinars or other interviews.

Better Touch Tool?- I?m not a fan of some of the gestures that came along with OSX Mountain Lion. ?This solves that problem and let?s you pretty much create whatever touchpad gestures you want.

Mars Edit?- Edit and format WordPress blog posts offline with this super useful desktop app. ?I find myself using this on trains or buses all the time if I don?t have wifi.

Visual Website Optimizer?- Not the cheapest service at around $50/month, but its the easiest way I?ve found to edit pages and split test offers.

Pretty Links?- Make all of your ugly affiliate links look nice, and well, pretty! I use the free ?lite? version and it works just fine.

Planning

Whether your simply planning your next blog post, or writing out a detailed business plan, reliable planning tools are key.

Evernote ? There are two types of people, those who ?get? Evernote, and those that don?t. Spend an hour going through some online tutorials, or even better just grab this book. You?ll understand why this is such an essential tool for so many people.

Google Docs ? It took me awhile to switch from Microsoft Office, but the ease of?collaboration?with all the Docs makes it totally worth it in my opinion.

Mindnode ? There are a lot of mindmap tools out there, but for me, simplicity is key. ?So I go with Mindnode.

Mockingbird ? Mocking up a new website look for a developer? Trying to get the user interface down for a new project? ?Mockingbird is my favorite tool for this. ?However, lately I?ve also used the Google Drive Drawing feature for this ? which has worked surprisingly well.

Market Samurai ? My SEO research tool of choice. ?If you?re thinking about a new online venture that will be based around search engine traffic, this is a much better option than the free Adwords Keyword Tool.

Productivity

When you work for yourself, productivity and discipline are absolutely essential.

Ask Me Every ? You may have noticed that one of my biggest struggles as an entrepreneur comes down to?productivity?and accountability. ?Ask Me Every is a super simple concept and app ? you set it up to ask you a question every day. ?Maybe its a text message that simply says ?Did you floss your teeth?? So far its worked surprisingly well for me.

Rescue Time ? Want to know how you?re wasting time each day? ?Use Rescue Time to not only track your online?productivity?but figure out how to fix it as well.

Spotify ? Pretty much the greatest thing to happen to music (for the listener), well, ever. ?Don?t have it yet? Go check it out and thank me later.

Rage Chill ? Every once in awhile it?s nice to mix it up from Spotify. Rage Chill has a simple premise ? drag the slider towards rage when you?re ready to get crazy, and drag it towards chill when you want to take it easy ? or leave it somewhere in between. Found some good music on here.

Communication

When you?re working with people all over the world, good tools for communicating are absolutely essential. ?Here are my favorites:

Trello ? Free solution for team collaboration. I actually like this better than paid solutions like Basecamp.

Box ? Need to transfer really large files between people you?re working with? Box works great.

Dropbox ? Creates a folder on your desktop, anything you put in there gets automatically backed up to the cloud. ?Also great for sharing documents with others.

We Chat ? This is all anyone uses in China, and after using it for the last week I can see why. ?More or less turns your phone into a walkie-talkie with recorded messages. ?Makes it really easy to get ahold of someone.

Skype ? You know what it is. ?Call any phone in the US from anywhere in the world for less than $10/mo unlimited.

Go To Webinar ? My webinar service of choice. ?Been using it for almost a year, and once you get a feel for it, it provides a great service.

Canned Responses ? I get a LOT of emails asking me the same questions. ?I can use canned responses to take snippets of emails and add them in. ?I always have personal responses, but sometimes I?ll drop in answers to questions that I see frequently. Find in Gmail Labs.

Boomerang ? Don?t want to deal with an email just yet, but want it out of your inox? ?Boomerang? it and have it come back in 2 days. You can also schedule responses and more with this app for Gmail.

Video and Photography

Video and photography are a big part of my business and are one of my hobbies to boot. ?On almost every trip I take, I?ll have a multitude of cameras, and am usually the one trying to stick it in your face.

iPhone 5 ? My go to for day to day photos and just about anything else I do on a regular basis. Photo and video quality is surprisingly good. ?When traveling internationally though I tend to ditch the phone and go with my trusty old iPod Touch.

Instagram ? I didn?t get it at first, but after 6 months of being an Instagram user, I?m hooked. ?It makes sharing photos with your friends fun.

Canon S110 ? The latest tool in my arsenal. So far this camera has been excellent, and the photos have been very high quality for such a small camera. ?Worth noting, at $450 I would have purchased the Panasonic Lumix LX7, however I got a pretty ridiculous deal on the Canon and paid less than $300.

Canon HF200 ? While surprisingly enough, the video quality is higher on my point and shoot, this camera is much more flexible for audio. ?Doing an interview and need an external mic? This is a great camera for that. ?Probably newer and better models out there.

Audio Technica Lav Mic ? The best $20 you could ever spend to improve your sound quality.

Adobe Creative Suite - I used Photoshop a ton for touch ups, and InDesign for all of my ebooks. ?If you can find a student to grab this for you, then it becomes a no brainer. Or at $50/mo for the entire Suite, you can also keep it relatively affordable up front.

HDR Efex Pro ? My preferred method of photography is HDR. Not only does it allow you to be more creative, but if you know what you?re doing, it can make you look like a much better photographer than you really are. Use coupon code ?hdrsoftware15? for 15% off.

Final Cut Pro X ? Blows iMovie out of the water. Same easy workflow, with pro level tools. ?This is how I edit all of my movies and videos.

Gear

Depending on the trip I travel with a lot of different types of travel gear.

15? Macbook Pro?- Yes, it?s expensive, but if you?re going to spend upwards of 10 hours a day on one machine that?s solely responsible for your income, wouldn?t you want the ?Ferrari of laptops??

Bose QC15 Headphones ? The best headphones I?ve ever owned, by a long shot. ?Kicks the crap out of my old Beats, mostly because the noise canceling is so effective.

Osprey Farpoint ? The latest bag, I purchased just for my recent trip to Asia. ?Not perfect ?for my needs, but its light, carries a ton of stuff, and has a detachable daypack that makes my life so much easier.

North Face Surge ? Traveling light, but still gadget heavy? This is perfect. The bigger than it looks North Face Surge, is all I had with me on my original 7 month trip to Thailand.

Lowepro Fastpack 350 ? My go to, day to day bag in the States and on photography trips. ?If all you need to carry is a laptop and camera gear ? this is perfect. ?This never left my back during my trip to Jordan last summer.

Benro Tripod ? I bought this for about 50 bucks in Bangkok nearly 3 years ago. It comes on almost every trip I take, and makes all the difference in the world when it comes to the quality of your photos.

Social

Tweetdeck ? My Twitter client of choice. Makes it easy to manage multiple twitter accounts from one desktop

Buffer ? Time tweets to go out at the times you select. ?Makes it really easy to tweet articles and websites you come across on the web.

Finance

Shoeboxed ? I used to have receipts EVERYWHERE when I was traveling. Now I snap a photo, have it get automatically uploaded and organized to the site, and then I get rid of the receipt. Easy peasy.

Outright ? How I manage my finances for my business. Really easy to use, great tools for taxes, and although its no longer free for the premium features, it?s still an excellent site.

Well there you have it. These are the tools I use on a regular basis to travel all over the world and still run my business online.

Cold Remedy Comes in Dessert Form

Jan 21, 2013 9:00am

It has been a record flu season so far, and people are doing whatever they can to avoid coming down with the ailment. But what can you do if you already have it?

Enter Jeni?s Splendid Ice Creams. The Ohio-based company?s Influenza Sorbet won?t cure the flu, but it will definitely make you feel better, said Jeni Britton Bauer, the company?s founder and president.

The Influenza Sorbet contains honey, ginger, orange juice and lemon juice. And if that weren?t enough, it also has Maker?s Mark bourbon and cayenne pepper.

The result is a soothing sorbet with kick. It might not be what the doctor ordered, but Bauer said it works.

?My mother and grandmother made something very similar to that as a drink when I was a kid, even with the whiskey,? Bauer said Sunday. ?Whiskey, honey and lemon juice and that was our cough medicine and they would thin it out and make it into a hot drink.?

Her company makes ice cream, but she got the idea to add the sorbet to her product line in 2004.

?When the flu hit in 2004, it was like supposed to be the worst flu since 1918 and it was like all over the news people were dying from it. It was horrible and I thought, ?Gosh I could do this sorbet,?? she recalled.

The sorbet also contains pectin, which coats the throat. The honey lubricates the throat and the cayenne pepper helps clear the nasal passages, she added.

The result is a product that soothes irritated throats and relieves scratchiness, helping suffers get needed sleep, she said.

With the severity of this flu season, interest in the Influenza Sorbet is soaring, Bauer said.

But the sorbet is more than just a home remedy. It tastes good, she said.

?It is really delicious,? she said. ?The cayenne doesn?t have flavor, it just has the kick, the physical property of the heat, and then all of the other ingredients are just so perfect together. You can just imagine it as a cocktail. A whiskey sour plus ginger.

?All those things go together so well and it really tastes great,? she said, adding that she had customers who buy it when it?s available and store it in their freezers so they can have it during the summer.

But don?t just take Bauer?s word for it. One food blog waxed poetic about the Influenza Sorbet.

In a 2009 post on thekitchn.com, a review said the sorbet was so good it was ?almost worth getting the flu for.?

Jeni?s Influenza Sorbet will be available through February and into March. It retails for $12 per pint and is sold at all Jeni?s stores in Columbus, Cleveland and Nashville, as well as on the company?s website.

(AP) ? Japanese and U.S. investigators began a probe Monday into the maker of the lithium ion batteries used in Boeing's grounded 787 jets.

Tsutomu Nishijima, a spokesman for GS Yuasa, the battery manufacturer, said investigators visited the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan and that Yuasa was cooperating with the probe.

All 50 of the 787 Dreamliners that Boeing has delivered to airlines were grounded after an overheated battery forced the emergency landing of an All Nippon Airways 787 flight last week in western Japan. Boeing has halted deliveries of new planes until it can address the electrical problems.

Monday's investigation involved an introductory meeting and factory tour, with deeper studies into product quality and other issues to follow as the probe continues, said Tatsuyuki Shimazu, the chief air worthiness engineer at the Civil Aviation Bureau's Aviation Safety Department.

Two investigators from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and an investigator from Japan's government were conducting the probe into how the batteries are made and assembled and into any quality issues, he said.

"We are in the midst of collecting information, so as to whether there is a problem or not has not yet been determined," Shimazu said.

Nishijima of GS Yuasa said he could not comment on details of the investigation.

The burned insides of the ANA battery showed it received voltage in excess of its design limits. However, a battery that caught fire in a Japan Airlines Boeing 787 in Boston earlier this month was found not to have been overcharged.

U.S. government investigators said there could still be problems with wiring or other charging components.

In the U.S., investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board planned to meet Tuesday with officials from Securaplane Technologies Inc., manufacturer of the charger for the 787s lithium ion batteries, at the company's headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., said Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for the board.

US-born Israeli parliamentary candidate in trouble

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A U.S.-born candidate for Israel's parliament could be disqualified from the race after a TV channel aired footage of him appearing to call for one of Islam's holiest shrines to be "blown up."

Jeremy Gimpel holds the No. 14 spot on the pro-settler Jewish Home list for parliament and has a reasonable chance of getting elected in Tuesday's vote.

Speaking at a Florida church in 2011, Gimpel introduced a scenario in which the golden-topped Dome of the Rock was "blown up" and in its place the cornerstone of the third Jewish Temple was placed.

He told the crowd "it would be incredible."

The compound is sacred to both Jews and Muslims. Gimpel says his comments were a "joke."

Israel's election committee said Monday it is considering whether to disqualify Gimpel.

Gambling may be available on airlines | Lake Tahoe News

Posted by admin in News on January 19th, 2013 | one response

By Daisy Carrington, CNN

Two French aviation design studios are betting on gambling in the air.

Jean-Pierre Alfano of AirJet Designs and Fr?d?rique Houssard, the founder of Designescence, have teamed up to create the Casino Jet Lounge, a luxe bar-cum-casino they hope will one day become standard on long-haul commercial flights. The Casino Jet Lounge features trendy seating, a drinks area and a blackjack table.

?We?re trying to bring back the glamor of the ?50s and ?60s a little bit; the kind you see in the James Bond movies,? says Houssard.

The concept is relatively new (launched last October), so as of now, Houssard and Alfano are still in talks with various airlines.

The idea of in-flight gambling may seem like a new one, principally because no airline is currently doing it. But in reality, the concept has been around for decades.

Singapore Airlines took gambling up in the air in 1981, when they installed lightweight slot machines in the aisles on a flight that operated between Singapore and San Francisco. It was an experiment that lasted a mere two months. The company admits the machines posed ?an operational challenge?, and had them removed.

In the 1990s, Swissair installed gambling software that allowed passengers to bet up to $350 on a variety of casino classics, including poker, keno and blackjack. It seemed other carriers were going to follow suit, that is, until a Swissair plane crashed in 1998. Air crash investigators implicated a failure of the jet?s in-flight entertainment system as a reason for the disaster.

However, the idea of in-flight gambling re-emerged a few years ago. Virgin Atlantic Airways tycoon Richard Branson announced in 2005 that a handful of recently purchased A380 planes would include double beds and in-flight casinos.

?You?ll have two ways to get lucky on a Virgin flight,? he joked with The New York Times.

The company seems to have backtracked since then.

?Casinos were just an idea, along with many other ideas we talked about a few years ago,? a Virgin spokesman told CNN. ?Truthfully, we did not really get any further with it.?

They declined to comment as to why they didn?t ultimately implement casinos on their A380s.

Ryanair announced in 2004 that it would introduce gambling through an in-flight entertainment system, though this too has yet to come to fruition. Ryanair?s head of communications, Stephen McNamara, said the company still hopes to do so in the future.

?We don?t have the technology in place at the moment, but hopefully we will in the next two or three years,? he says. ?Really, the reason we don?t currently is based on the expense of the Wi-Fi technology that would be required for it. We?re waiting for the price to come down.?

Aside from the initial investment, there are several other barriers to introducing casinos on airplanes. For starters, as more carriers are unrolling Wi-Fi on their flights, passengers could feasibly just gamble online from their mobile devices. One wonders if this wouldn?t defeat the purpose of airlines investing in their own gaming systems.

McNamara says that Ryanair plans to combat the issue by ultimately offering ?closed loop? Wi-Fi, so that passengers will have to go through the airline?s own system to gamble.

Houssard and Alfano also don?t see online gambling as competition to their own concept.

?When you?re gambling on your screen, or on your phone, you?re still cramped with other people. If you get out of your seat and enter another space with your friends and colleagues, it gives you a completely different experience,? notes Alfano.

?When you?re on a 14-hour flight, even when you?re in business class, all you can really do is eat, drink, watch movies and sleep. The Casino Jet Lounge isn?t just a bar or entertainment idea. We see it as a social space.?

It?s difficult to imagine that airlines would be willing to give over potential passenger space (and the fares that come with it) to a social arena, but Alfano says if designed properly, there shouldn?t be a conflict.

?Most big aircrafts have crew rest areas and lavatories in the cargo area down below. The space could be easily rearranged to include a social space, without representing a loss of revenue,? he says.

The biggest obstacle to in-flight gambling, however, is a legal one. Since 1994, gambling has been prohibited in U.S. airspace. Still, Houssard believes that this might change in the future.

?A few years ago, it was forbidden to play games for money on the internet. It was not open then, but now you can play online. A lot of things are changing.?

About Marbles: the Brain Store

We?re a one-of-a-kind retail store with a smart collection of hand-picked, expert-tested, certifiably fun ways to a healthier brain for all ages. The best part? Our stores are designed to let you roll up your sleeves and get a little brainy while you play games, solve puzzles, try out software and flip through books to find the right products for you and your noggin. Our team is chock-full of smart, outgoing people who are passionate about learning new things and creating a fun, interactive environment where customers can reach their brain?s fullest potential.

Where We Started

Our CEO Lindsay Gaskins and her brainy teammates started Marbles: The Brain Store with the simple idea of finding the best brain games out there and putting them all in one place. Not just products for aging baby boomers concerned about memory loss and victims of brain disorders like stroke, Alzheimer?s, dementia and ADHD. But also products for anyone who wanted to improve focus and attention, enhance creativity, become better multi-taskers and get the most out of the smartest supercomputer out there: the brain.

Our idea was supported by some pretty compelling research and mind-boggling advances in the field of neuroplasticity. So we went for it ? opening a kiosk in May of 2008, one of the deepest parts of the recession and probably not the brightest time to start a new retail store. People thought we had lost our minds. To the contrary, we had just found them.

We failed miserably. Which we?re not ashamed to admit. Hey, failure breeds success, right? The idea was great. The products were great. The experience?not so great. But customers loved the concept so we opened our first store in downtown Chicago in October 2008. This time, we got the experience right. With a bigger space, customers could actually play with every product. Our staff had to play with every product, too, in order to field questions from our brainy customers. The response was phenomenal so we opened three more Chicagoland stores in 2009, four more stores in the midwest in 2010, and now 10 more stores across the east coast in 2011. The rest, they say, is history. Albeit a short one. Which means we?re just getting started.

Where We're Going

Our goal is to bring the smartest and most engaging selection of brain training products to as many people as possible. So we?re not shy about saying we?d like to be a national retail operation within the next five to 10 years. But, we want to do it right so we?re very thoughtful and smart about our growth opportunities.

Stroke

Because stroke affects different functional areas of the brain, there is no single recommended treatment plan for stroke. Instead, doctors and therapists of various disciplines must work together to create an appropriate rehabilitation plan to match each individual stroke victim's needs. This may involve speech therapy, physical therapy, nutrition counseling, mental health treatment, and more.

After a stroke, mental and physical capabilities are regained through the brain's ability to change, or neuroplasticity. This means that a person who loses a particular function due to stroke must work very hard and in a targeted manner to retrain their brain and regain that function.

Board games are an excellent way to target the different sections of the brain and help a recovering stroke victim regain their prior abilities. With practice, a stroke survivor can strengthen neural connections for the lost functions and regain some or all of their prior abilities.

Syria: Twin suicide blasts hit south of Damascus

BEIRUT (AP) ? Two car bombs exploded in southern Syria and a rocket slammed into a building in the north, killing at least 12 people in a spike in civil war violence Friday that Syrian state media blamed on rebel fighters trying to topple President Bashar Assad.

The rocket attack in the northern city of Aleppo and the suicide car bombings in Daraa, south of Damascus, occurred during a particularly bloody week nearly two years after an uprising began against Assad's regime. On Thursday, opposition activists said pro-government militia swept through a town in central Syria, torching houses and killing more than 100 people.

Both sides have been blaming each other for the recent attacks, and it was the second time in a week that the government accused rebels of firing rockets.

The state-run SANA news agency said the morning attack in Aleppo was carried out by terrorists, a term the regime uses for rebels. But the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, an activist group, and the Aleppo Media Center, a network of anti-regime activists, accused the government of launching an airstrike.

On Tuesday, 87 people were killed in twin blasts at Aleppo University. The regime said rebels hit the university with rockets. Rebels said the deaths resulted from regime airstrikes.

Syria's state-run TV claimed that shortly after the rocket hit the building in Aleppo, militants linked to an al-Qaida group detonated cars filled with explosives near a mosque in Daraa as worshippers were leaving following Friday prayers.

Video broadcast on Syrian state TV showed several floors of the targeted building collapsed in a government-controlled area of Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center and main commercial hub. The video showed a man carrying a baby out of the damaged building and another man was seen clutching his head as blood ran down his forehead. Residents were also seen looking for people buried in the rubble. At least one injured person on a stretcher was seen being carried away in a Red Crescent ambulance.

State TV reports said both attacks caused many casualties, but it was not immediately known how many people were killed or wounded in the two cities ? both major fronts in the civil war.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 people were killed in the Aleppo attack and dozens were wounded. The group relies on reports from activists on the ground.

Government troops and rebels have been locked in a deadly stalemate in Aleppo and other areas in the north since last summer. Six months later, the rebels hold large parts of the city. Still, they have been unable to overcome the regime's far superior firepower.

With the two sides deadlocked on the northern front, rebels have increasingly targeted state security facilities and government institutions in other parts of the country, including in the capital, Damascus. Suicide attacks have been a hallmark of the Islamic rebel units that have been fighting alongside other opposition fighters.

State TV said fighters with Jabhat al-Nusra, a group the U.S. has declared a terrorist organization, were behind the twin blasts in Daraa.

Daraa is the birthplace of the revolt that erupted in March 2011. It began as peaceful protests against Assad's rule but quickly turned into a civil war after a brutal government crackdown on dissent More than 60,000 people have been killed in the violence, according to a recent United Nation's estimate.

Also on Friday, fighting between Syrian rebels and Assad's loyalists flared in a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, killing 12 people and wounding at least 20 others, a U.N. refugee agency said. Children were among the casualties, according to a statement issued by the U.N. Relief and Works Agency. The agency called on both sides to "pull back from civilian areas, including refugee camps."

The Palestinian camp called Yarmouk has been the scene of heavy clashes between rebels and regime loyalists since mid-December, when opposition fighters moved into the camp during an attempt to storm the capital.

About half of Yarmouk's 150,000 residents have fled since fighting erupted in mid-December, according to UNRWA, which administers Palestinian camps in the Middle East. Some sought refuge in neighboring Lebanon, and others found shelter in UNRWA schools in Damascus and other Syrian cities.

Dozens have been killed in the fighting, although the United Nations did not provide an exact figure of casualties in Yarmouk violence, which has included airstrikes and artillery shelling from the Syrian military.

On Syria's northern border with Turkey, regime fighter jets pounded villages in rebel-held areas in Latakia province, dropping makeshift bombs made from hundreds of pounds (kilograms) of explosives stuffed into barrels, Turkey's state-run Anadolu agency said. The so-called barrel bombs were used in strikes on targets in Latakia Friday, the agency said, adding the regime's assault included military helicopters.

The shelling of Latakia could be heard across the border in the Turkish province of Hatay, according to the news report, which also reported heavy clashes between government troops and rebels in Syria's northern Idlib province, also along the border with Turkey.

There were no reports of any deaths in the fighting. Ambulances were sent to the border region to bring wounded Syrians to hospitals in Turkey, the agency said.

Men at 'high' skeletal risk prior to prostate cancer hormone therapy likely to have more fractures after treatment

Jan. 17, 2013 ? In what is believed to be the first study to describe the impact on men with a 'high' risk of bone fracture who are receiving long-term androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer, new research from The Cancer Institute of New Jersey shows this population to have a higher fracture incidence following treatment completion. The findings, published in the latest online version of BJU International, also show that men who experienced a fracture had a 1.38-fold higher mortality risk than those who did not. The Cancer Institute of New Jersey is a Center of Excellence of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS).

Men with localized prostate cancer who have underlying health conditions often receive this type of therapy with the hope to shrink or delay growth of their cancer, because they are considered inappropriate candidates for more aggressive therapies such as surgery or radiation. Previous studies have shown an association between the receipt of ADT for prostate cancer and an increased risk of bone fracture and other skeletal complications, such as a decrease in bone mineral density. The investigators at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey further explored the impact of this treatment on men already deemed to be at high risk for fracture prior to receiving therapy.

Using the population-based Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database, researchers reviewed information on demographics and tumor characteristics from 75,994 men aged 66 and older who were diagnosed as having localized prostate cancer from 1992 to 2007. All of the SEER registries hold the highest level of certification of data quality. A risk assessment scale for baseline skeletal complications -- including fracture -- was created, utilizing the presence of certain conditions within one year prior to cancer diagnosis. These conditions included diabetes, alcohol and cigarette use, paralysis, and liver disease.

Investigators found that during a 12-year follow up, more than 58 percent of men deemed at high fracture risk prior to treatment and 38 percent considered at low risk developed at least one fracture following ADT. The research also showed that men with a high baseline risk had a higher probability of receiving ADT (52.1 percent) compared to those with a low baseline risk (38.2 percent). It was also determined that those men receiving ADT by itself were likely to have a stronger dose than those who received ADT in combination with other treatments for their prostate cancer. Mortality risk was found to be 40 percent higher within two years after experiencing a fracture.

"Our findings suggest that treating men having a high baseline risk of fracture with long-term androgen deprivation therapy may have serious adverse consequences," said senior author Grace Lu-Yao, PhD, MPH, cancer epidemiologist at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and professor of medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and of epidemiology at UMDNJ-School of Public Health. "We anticipate the results of this study will prompt further examination of a patient's baseline-risk of fracture and skeletal complications prior to administering this course of therapy."

The authors note the use of bisphosphonates, which are effective in preventing bone loss in patients with prostate cancer receiving ADT, was not available in the SEER-Medicare linked data. Information regarding a patient's height and weight, which can be considered risk factors for skeletal complications, also was not available. Data on men younger than 66 were not examined. Despite these limitations, Dr. Lu-Yao, says their investigation shines new light on a large subset of men who commonly receive ADT.

Along with Lu-Yao, the author team consists of Yu-Hsuan Shao, PhD, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and UMDNJ-School of Public Health; Dirk F. Moore, PhD, Weichung Shih, PhD, Yong Lin, PhD, and Thomas L. Jang, MD, MPH, all The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The study was supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute (R01 CA 116399) and (Cancer Center Support Grant -- P30 CA072720-13); and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (60624).

Young Cubans Take a Critical Look at Fatherhood ? Global Issues

  • by Ivet Gonzalez (havana)
  • Wednesday, January 16, 2013
  • Inter Press Service

HAVANA, Jan 16 (IPS) - While more and more young men in Cuba today are rising above cultural prejudices that condition their role as fathers, many continue to conform to traditional styles of fatherhood, often reproducing negative patterns of neglect and abandonment, with serious repercussions for the whole family in light of the country's economic and legal situation.

A father and son in a Havana street. Credit: Jorge Luis Ba?os /IPS

"Many take fatherhood seriously and come to it with a different attitude, but others don't. The way I see it, it depends on the social environment they move in, their age, and whether the pregnancy was planned or not," says Raynol P?rez, a young 24-year-old father who is home to put his small daughter Vanesa to bed every night.

In his opinion, the pregnancy is a critical period.

"The future father's involvement or lack of involvement during the pregnancy is an indication of how he will behave when the baby is born," he tells IPS.

"A good way to measure this is by the number of pregnant women who go to their medical check-ups with a man. There's still only very few men who accompany their partners to their appointments," this young married man, whose daughter was born when he was studying law at Havana University, says.

In a 2011 article on the role of fathers in Cuban families (published in Spanish under the title "Una mirada del ejercicio de la paternidad en familias cubanas"), psychologist Anais ?ngela Chapelli revealed that the issue has for the most part not been addressed from a male perspective in studies conducted on the subject in this Caribbean island.

Chapelli notes that more information is needed on how men view fatherhood and on their experiences as fathers.

There have been changes in the way fatherhood is experienced and viewed, which have been brought on by the erosion of the patriarchal system through the advancement of women's rights, as well as by a number of increasingly widespread phenomena, such as civil unions, migration, unwed mothers, divorces, same-sex unions, blended families, and single-parent households headed by men.

However, over half a century of public policies aimed at improving the situation of women have failed to eradicate Cuba's deep-rooted sexist culture, with strong stereotypes still dictating how fathers and mothers are expected to behave. Moreover, while there are many social efforts made to bring about change among women, very little is done to promote a similar change in men.

But sociologist Magela Romero and other young experts on the subject have observed a growing trend in Cuban families, as more and more the role of ?provider' ? economic or otherwise ? is no longer seen as an exclusively male obligation, and men are in turn more involved in domestic life and new forms of fatherhood.

But these experts also note that fatherhood still takes a backseat to motherhood.

University student Emanuel George told IPS that the view that a father's role is limited to that of "economic and material provider" is a firmly entrenched stereotype. Popular sayings such as "Anyone can be your father, but you have only one mother" perpetuate this image, George says.

Lourdes Pasalodos, a journalist, has delved further in the issue. Her book "En el nombre del hijo" (In the name of the son), published in 2009, openly addresses fatherhood problems such as abandonment and neglect, approaching them from a common-sense perspective.

"This affects both men and women," Pasalodos told IPS. In her opinion, "the presence of men in the home has become less important" as a result of the high rate of male emigration in the 1990s and a sexist culture that is still going strong and "pushes men away from the home", among other factors.

"Once they're divorced or separated, many fathers forget their obligations to their children, causing them psychological, emotional, and financial harm," she said. The period from 2010 to 2011 saw a slight increase in the annual rate of marriages, and while the rate of divorces has dropped, it remains high.

However, the last fertility study, which was conducted in 2009 by the National Bureau of Statistics and Information, revealed that young couples choose a civil union over marriage, and that "they see marriage differently" from previous generations, as they no longer view it as a necessary step before sexual relations or as a precondition to having children.

Pasalodos believes a cultural and educational change is needed. "Many live as a family but are never home and leave their children's care to the mother of their children," she says.

"We need to bring our education in line with the times and start teaching elementary school children about both the roles of mothers and fathers, and how to change a diaper, for example, among other parenting skills," she suggests.

This cultural gap may explain why the legal progress made in terms of gender equality in recent years has had little impact. As of 2007, only 17 fathers had applied to fully enjoy their right to care for or share in the care of their children during their first year of life, as provided under Decree Law No. 234, passed in 2003.

Official sources say the situation has not changed much since then.

This legal measure was promoted by the non-governmental organisation Federaci?n de Mujeres Cubanas (Federation of Cuban Women or FMC) with the aim of guaranteeing the right of working fathers to take a year off work to care for their infant children in the event of the death or abandonment of the children's mother, and to a six-month leave to take over for the mother once the exclusive breastfeeding period is over.

A 25-year-old biologist from the southern coastal city of Cienfuegos, located 232 kilometres from Havana, observes that when a couple splits up, the father's relationship with their children changes, as the children usually stay with the mother.

According to this young professional who asked to remain anonymous, the change in how a father behaves towards his children after a separation is so common that people often talk of fathers also "divorcing their kids."

"I'm not just saying this because that's how it was with me and my daughter. I've seen it happen to a lot of people I know," the biologist, who works at a government research centre, told IPS in a telephone interview. In her opinion, it all comes down to the father's sense of responsibility.

She also believes that the Code of Family Law, which is from 1975, "is very outdated and its provisions are too general."

When she separated she pored over those regulations, which she says, "talk about everything but specify nothing", and in the end filed a legal complaint to obtain court-ordered child support from her ex-husband and to settle custody issues. "I was lucky because my lawyer has handled many cases like mine and the judge put my little girl's well-being first," she says.

"We were able to get more child support than what is usually granted and the judge ruled that my ex would only be able to have our baby overnight after she was no longer breastfeeding," she adds. But "the money he has to send me every month doesn't even cover half of what I need to support her," and "unless he comes to see her he forgets about her and doesn't worry about how she's doing," she complains.

While very much ahead of its time in child protection and gender equality issues, the Code of Family Law needs to be revised and amended to reflect the current situation of Cuban families, activists say. FMC and Cuba's National Union of Jurists worked together on a new draft code and presented it to parliament several years ago, but legislators have yet to discuss it.
