(AP) ? Microsoft is pulling out of the joint venture that owned MSNBC.com, freeing the world's largest software maker to build its own online news service.

The breakup announced late Sunday dissolves the final shreds of a 16-year marriage between Microsoft Corp. and NBC News, which is now owned by Comcast Corp. The relationship began to unwind in 2005 when Microsoft sold its stake in MSNBC's cable TV channel to NBC.

Terms of the deal weren't revealed. The New York Times cited unnamed people knowledgeable about the deal who said Microsoft will receive about $300 million for in exchange for its 50 percent stake in the joint venture.

MSNBC.com has been rebranded as NBCNews.com. Anyone typing MSNBC.com into a Web browser is now being automatically redirected to NBCNews.com.

The website will move its headquarters from Microsoft's corporate campus in Redmond, Wash., to NBC News' longtime home in New York.

The online divorce stemmed from the two partners' desire to gain greater control over their digital destinies as the Internet becomes an increasingly important part of their businesses.

The inherent constraints of being locked into a joint venture sometimes handcuffed Microsoft and NBC.

Microsoft, in particular, had grown frustrated by contract terms requiring it to exclusively feature MSNBC.com content on its own websites. That exasperation was exacerbated by the MSNBC cable channel's strategy to counter Fox News Channel's appeal to conservative viewers by tailoring its programming for an audience with a liberal viewpoint.

The strategy fed a perception that material from MSNBC's website was politically slanted, too.

"Being limited to MSNBC.com content was problematic to us because we couldn't have the multiple news sources and the multiple perspectives that our users were telling us that they wanted," said Bob Visse, general manager of Microsoft's MSN portal and a board member of the former MSNBC joint venture.

Now that it has shed those shackles, Microsoft is preparing to launch its own news service this fall. Although he declined to provide many details about the operation, Visse said the news staff will be about the same size as the roughly 100 people who created original content for the former MSNBC.com.

By hiring its own news staff to feed material to its websites, Microsoft is embracing the same strategy as the owners of two other major Internet companies, Yahoo Inc. and AOL Inc.

Microsoft has leaned on its lucrative franchise selling personal computer software to finance massive Internet investments that have rarely paid off, much to the frustration of its shareholders. The software maker initially invested $220 million in the MSNBC joint venture. It's unclear if Microsoft ended up making any money on the alliance. As a whole, the company's online operations, which include the Bing search engine and MSN portal, have lost more than $10 billion in the past seven years.

Even as it sets out to compete against NBC News, Microsoft will continue to highlight the top stories from its former partner for the next two years under terms of the split.

NBC News, in turn, believes it will be able to attract more traffic to its stable of websites by forging other partnerships that were off-limits when it was tied to Microsoft.

"There is no question that we are going to have more flexibility to make our own decisions," said Vivian Schiller, NBC News' chief digital officer. "This is really an amicable breakup. We think competition will make us better."

MSNBC.com and its affiliated sites ranked as the Internet's fourth most popular site for general news in the U.S., with nearly 50 million visitors in June, up 5 percent from last year, according to the research firm comScore Inc.

Yahoo's recently formed alliance with ABC News topped the charts with 81 million visitors, followed by AOL/Huffington Post, and CNN.

As part of its online restructuring, NBC News plans to create a new online destination for the MSNBC cable channel's personalities next year.

Although it will be based in New York, NBCNews.com will retain a significant staff in the Seattle area, according to Schiller. About 170 of MSNBC.com's 300 employees worked in the Seattle area.

Microsoft is letting NBCNews.com remain in its Redmond office while it looks for a new location in the area.

89% Polisse

"Polisse" synopsis is so dull and poor that I am glad I had not read it before watching the movie. The "journalist covering police assigned to a juvenile division that enters an affair with one of her subjects" is only part of a wider and more complex quilt of characters and interesting stories.Ma?wenn brings up the dirty and dark side of Paris with the help of an excellent team of child actors - Malonn L?vana, the lovely little girl of "Tomboy" (where she plays the sister of the leading character) is someone to keep an eye on - and the best known actors of the French cinema of today: Marina Fo?s, Sandrine Kiberlain, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Fr?d?ric Pierrot, Karin Viard, Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Alice de Lencquesaing (L'heure d'?t?, Le p?re de mes enfants), J?r?mie Elka?m (La guerre est d?clar?e), Karole Rocher, and others. This team of stars, however, can be a double-edged sword: at the same time it calls the attention and arouses curiosity, it can also hinder the identification with the characters and/or concentration. It was just me, perhaps, but every time a known face appeared on the screen, my mind would unplug and try to remember in which movie I had seen that actor. Despite the great cast and some memorable moments, "Polisse" is average. It looks like a police tv drama show, both in format and melodrama, but a very good one it?s true. If made for tv, all the crucial subjects raised by Ma?wenn - such as pedophilia, social welfare, immigration, violence - could be better placed and developed, taking in mind the way she chose to portray them. Choices, by the way, seem to be carefully taken. Melissa ?s "ugly panties" being childlike and having the saying "spank me" that she didn?t know what means may work as an alert on how we collaborate with these sexual "fair tale" fantasies. The saying in English (spank me) may also be a criticism on our contemporary times where we usually follow global and standardized models/ideas, sometimes without really knowing or thinking about what they mean, what can be also seen, let?s say, in the episode of the "telephone teenager girl". "But it was a smartphone". Although I don't think "Polisse" is that good, Ma?wenn definitely got my attention. I liked a lot her character Melissa and how it develops and grow as the story unfolds; I was delighted with the funny discussion over the changes in the French language (on how we are killing our language); and the final scene really impressed me - the ending can be melodramatic as said Peter Bradshaw, but definitely not unconvincing. That said, I will sure check Ma?wenn's previous movies and will be waiting for more.

Alistair Overeem Says Junior Dos Santos is Afraid to Fight Him

Alistair Overeem Says Junior Dos Santos is Afraid to Fight Him
Posted by Jeremy Thomas?on 07.08.2012

Overeem is calling the champion out?

Alistair Overeem recently spoke about UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, who he was supposed to face before testing positive for elevated testosterone levels, and more. Check out the highlights:

On Dos Santos: "Junior Dos Santos is the champion for a reason. I'm just going to lay low. I'm going to fight whoever they put in front of me. But I'm going to get my hands on him, and when I do, he's all mine."

On using his forced time off to rest up: "I have not had time off since 2004. That year, I had to cancel some fights with some injuries. Since 2005, I've had four, five, six, even seven fights per year. I never really had a couple months off. So for me now, this is wonderful. I can actually go out and have a social life. I'm continuing to train. I'm continuing to improve my game. But I feel good because I was always in fight preparation ? always, from one guy to the next. Now I'm having some time for myself. I'm using this time wisely. I'm settled into Miami. I really love it there. I'm finishing my house. And if you're in fight preparation all the time, you can't really do that. You're just training all the time, and you have to go to bed every night at 11 p.m., and you're not really meeting new people, so for me, this time off is great. I'm clearing my mind, and I can assure you I'm going to be back stronger in December."

On his recent meeting with Dana White going well: "Dana is an honest guy. He's also a direct guy. We're actually very alike. I'm also very direct. I think we'll get along. We're just taking our time. It was a good meeting. It was very calm. We voiced our opinions about what happened and just took it easy. It was positive. We were actually very much on the same page. He appreciated that I came in to speak to him directly, and I was satisfied after the meeting. It was very positive."

On who he'll face on his return: "For me, it doesn't matter. I have 69 fights under my belt. For me, it doesn't matter who I fight. I don't need to have a warm-up fight. I'm going to leave that up to the gentlemen of the UFC to decide. I'm sure they're going to come up with something interesting. Fine by me. If they want me to go for the title, I'm going to be ready for that. If they don't, I'm also going to be ready."

On Dos Santos: "He can talk all he wants. I know he's very happy that fight didn't happen, and I know he's afraid to fight me. He also knows that I'm the biggest threat out there to him. He knows when he fights me, there's no escape from it. He's going to hit and run, or he's going to go down. Either way, he's going to leave that octagon a loser."

?
The fuck is this guy talking about? Dos Santos doesn't have to worry about fighting him, because he wont pass a drug test and will be cut by the UFC. Only problem then is he'll still be talking about how Dos Santos is still scared to face him.

I love Overeem in the cage, not so much outside it, and the drug thing is a huge cloud over his head. Also, as unquestionably impressive as he is, he only started racking up wins in mid-2007 when all of a sudden the names opposite him became significantly less impressive.

His last two wins have been big ones, and they certainly put him quite high in contention (provided he's clean), but I won't be surprised or disappointed if Cain vs. JDS happens first.

First photo of shadow of single atom

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

In an international scientific breakthrough, a Griffith University research team has been able to photograph the shadow of a single atom for the first time.

"We have reached the extreme limit of microscopy; you can not see anything smaller than an atom using visible light," Professor Dave Kielpinski of Griffith University's Centre for Quantum Dynamics in Brisbane, Australia.

"We wanted to investigate how few atoms are required to cast a shadow and we proved it takes just one," Professor Kielpinski said.

Published this week in Nature Communications, "Absorption imaging of a single atom "is the result of work over the last 5 years by the Kielpinski/Streed research team.

At the heart of this Griffith University achievement is a super high-resolution microscope, which makes the shadow dark enough to see.

No other facility in the world has the capability for such extreme optical imaging.

Holding an atom still long enough to take its photo, while remarkable in itself, is not new technology; the atom is isolated within a chamber and held in free space by electrical forces.

Professor Kielpinski and his colleagues trapped single atomic ions of the element ytterbium and exposed them to a specific frequency of light. Under this light the atom's shadow was cast onto a detector, and a digital camera was then able tocapture the image.

"By using the ultra hi-res microscope we were able to concentrate the image down to a smaller area than has been achieved before, creating a darker image which is easier to see", Professor Kielpinski said.

The precision involved in this process is almost beyond imagining.

"If we change the frequency of the light we shine on the atom by just one part in abillion, the image can no longer be seen," Professor Kielpinski said.

Research team member, Dr Erik Streed, said the implications of these findings are far reaching.

"Such experiments help confirm our understanding of atomic physics and may be useful for quantum computing," Dr Streed said.

There are also potential follow-on benefits for biomicroscopy.

"Because we are able to predict how dark a single atom should be, as in how much light it should absorb in forming a shadow, we can measure if the microscope is achieving the maximum contrast allowed by physics."

"This is important if you want to look at very small and fragile biological samples such as DNA strands where exposure to too much UV light or x-rays will harm the material.

"We can now predict how much light is needed to observe processes within cells, under optimum microscopy conditions, without crossing the threshold and destroying them."

And this may get biologists thinking about things in a different way.

"In the end, a little bit of light just might be enough to get the job done."

Trend Micro warns of Android malware pandemic by Q4 2012

Android malware levels are rising at an alarming rate, according to antivirus maker Trend Micro.?

The security firm said at the start of the year, it had found more than 5,000 malicious applications designed to target Google's Android mobile operating system, but the figure has since risen to about 20,000 in recent months.

By the coming third-quarter, the firm estimates there will be around 38,000 malware samples, and close to 130,000 in the fourth-quarter.

If Trend Micro is forecasting the numbers correctly, it won't be a flu epidemic you'll be worried about come winter: it'll be an Android malware pandemic.

Google Play has also been used as a platform to distribute malicious data-stealing or privacy-infringing apps --- arguably the source of many of the malicious apps.?

ZDNet's Ryan Naraine warned this time last year that it was Google's "inability" to keep malware-ridden apps out of the then-named Android Market that has led to an Android malware epidemic, and it even today it continues to be a "source of embarrassment" for the search turned mobile giant..

Trend Micro said more than a dozen malicious apps were downloaded over 700,000 times before they were removed by Google.

The various malware specimens found often vary in what they do: some steal data, some track mobile devices through GPS, while others throw up advertisements or configure the dialler to ring premium rate numbers.?

Android has more than 50 percent of the mobile market share, according to the?latest comScore figures, making the mobile platform an attractive target for malware writers.

"The growth in Android malware demonstrates sustained and focussed criminal interest in the mobile platform and particularly in the Android operating system," said Rik Ferguson, Trend Micro's director of security research and communications.

Google did not respond for comment at the time of writing because it's "office will be closed on?July 4-6 for Independence Day,"?but will update if the search giant responds.

A comparative analysis of in vitro expansion of natural killer cells of a patient with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and ovarian cancer with patients with other solid tumours.

Abstract

The functional profile of natural killer (NK) cells has been reported to be lower in auto-immune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA). In this study, we report a comparative analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) and the in vitro expansion of NK cells in a patient with AIHA and cancer, with that of other cancer patients without AIHA. PBMNCs and in vitro NK-cell expansion of a 64-year old female patient with ovarian cancer and AIHA was compared with that of four other patients with cancer without AIHA who underwent autologous immune enhancement therapy (AIET). The NK cells were cultured using autologous plasma without feeder layers. The quantities of PBMNCs, NK cells and CD3-CD56+ cells were compared. The average quantity of PBMNCs per ml in Cases I to V were 10.71, 39.2, 49.26, 65.16 and 49.33?10(4), respectively, and the average maximum count of NK cells was 3.9, 1730.03, 1824.16, 1058.61 and 761?10(6), respectively. The average percentage of CD3-CD56+ cells in Cases I to V following in vitro expansion was 1.2, 65.7, 28.63, 65.9 and 40%, respectively. In the present study, probably the first in the literature, the in vitro expansion of NK cells was found to be significantly lower in the AIHA patient. Previously, only a lower NK-cell functional profile was reported. Further studies are required to establish the association between AIHA and NK-cell profile and in vitro expansion, and to find common antibodies between red blood cells (RBCs) and NK cells.
