IRL: Mailbox, Behringer iNuke Boom Junior and the Fujifilm X-E1

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

You may have heard that a little app called Mailbox launched a few days ago. You may have also heard it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. As it turns out, Darren hates it. Fortunately, it's not all doom and gloom this week: Jason's impressed with the miniaturized iNuke Boom Junior speaker, and Philip is just happy to answer questions about his new camera.

Vegas casino seeking Britney Spears residency

(AP) ? After weeks of speculation, Caesars Entertainment is confirming that it's trying to lure Britney Spears to Las Vegas for a recurring gig at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.

Spokeswoman Emily Wofford said Friday the company is in negotiations to install the pop princess on the Las Vegas Strip.

The 31-year-old "Scream & Shout" singer stoked residency rumors last week by responding with a "Viva Las Vegas" hashtag to a post from her dog's Twitter account asking if puppies can gamble in Sin City.

Spears left her position on the television singing contest "The X Factor" in January, telling fans she wanted to refocus on her music.

Caesars Entertainment currently is promoting residencies by singers Cee Lo Green at Planet Hollywood and Shania Twain at Caesars Palace.

Famed Delacroix canvas defaced at new Louvre

PARIS (AP) ? A visitor to the Louvre's newest extension, in northern France, has been detained after scrawling an inscription in marker on the famed canvas of Eugene Delacroix "Liberty Leading the People."

The 28-year-old woman was immediately seized by a guard and another visitor, then handed over to police, according to a statement from the Louvre-Lens on Friday. It said the painting should be easily cleaned.

The Louvre-Lens opened in December in Lens, a struggling coal town with an unemployment rate nearly three times the national average.

The Delacroix work is among the artist's most famous. It shows a bare-breasted woman (Liberty) holding aloft the French flag as she urges on a crowd of revolutionaries. According to Le Figaro newspaper, the woman wrote "AE911" near the bottom of the canvas.

ScienceOnline-spiration.

ScienceOnline is a conference put on by Karyn Traphagen, Anton Zuiker, and our own Bora Zivkovic. I?ve been going since I first stumbled across it in 2010, making this year the fourth time I?ve attended. Over the years the conference has managed to expand and change while keeping its original spirit of inclusiveness, discovery, collaboration, and fun.

It was easy enough to come to the conference when it was in my own backyard in Durham, North Carolina, but the sense of community of the conference drew me back all the way from my new home in Wisconsin. The result was four days of late nights talking at the bar, sitting in on perspective-granting sessions, and meeting tons of people with lots of moxie.

These people are truly my people. Why? Well, for one reason, Baba Brinkman, evolutionary rapper, was one of the Converge session presenters. His song Performance, Feedback, Revision plus the session on Blogging for the Long Haul (great post on the session by Scicurious here) congealed in my head to form a reminder of the energy and excitement I felt when I first started this blog. Attending ScienceOnline always gives me many new ideas for things to present on my blog, so watch this space for some new things to come.

Iran's President Wants to be Country's 1st Astronaut

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be headed to space one day, if a recent public statement is to be believed.

Speaking at an exhibition of Iran's space achievements in Tehran, the Islamic Republic's president said he would be the first human launched to space aboard an Iranian rocket, the Mehr news agency reported.

"I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad said.

The comment came just a week after Iran launched a live monkey into space inside a capsule named Pishgam ("Pioneer" in Farsi), which was lofted aboard a suborbital rocket.

"Sending living things to space is the result of Iranian efforts and dedication of thousands of Iranian professional scientists," Ahmadinejad said, according to the Mehr news agency.

Iranian officials said the monkey's launch was a scientific precursor to sending humans to space, though international experts have been skeptical, worrying that the same rocket technology used in these experiments could be applied to launch ballistic missiles carrying nuclear warheads.

Ahmadinejad dismissed those concerns and said Iranian scientists should be on the lookout for international sabotage efforts on its space program, according to the Mehr news agency.

"We should admit that some [powers] do not tolerate Iranian greatness and growth. Iranians [have] incited devils' hatred by Iranian idealism, perfectionism, and being human," he said.

If Ahmadinejad does eventually go to space, he will not be the first Iranian to do so. That distinction is held by Iranian-American engineer and entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, who paid to visit the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2006. She was the first, and so far the only, female space tourist.
