Seven Things to Consider When Buying Travel Insurance - Go For Fun

Sun umbrella protection

The process of buying travel insurance is an important part of preparing for any holiday. Most holiday-makers would agree that it?s worth paying to protect themselves against the threat of huge hospital bills abroad, if only for their peace of mind.

However, some tourists are still failing to put enough effort into choosing their travel insurance product. There is a lot more to consider than how much each policy costs. Here are seven factors which all tourists should consider when selecting the best travel insurance policy for them.

#1 Destination

The destination of a holiday will usually have an effect on the premium offered to tourists. Those travelling outside of Europe can usually expect to pay a little more, especially if they are planning on touching down in countries where the risk of violence and conflict is considered higher than average. Make sure to mention all of the destinations you are planning on travelling to.

#2 Sports

skiing

Are you planning on playing any sports on holiday? If so, you will need to check that your insurance policy will cover any injuries suffered during these activities. Some providers offer special products aimed specifically at those going on water sports, winter sports holidays and the like.

#3 Behaviour

It is important to read the terms and conditions of any travel insurance policy before committing to buy. This document should let you know what behaviour will be covered and won?t. This mostly applies to sports holidays. For example, some policies will require skiers to wear a helmet at all times. Some won?t allow them to go off-piste etc. In a nutshell, the majority of insurers won?t let their customers engage in life-threatening behaviour.

#4 Illnesses

Do you have any illnesses or diseases? No matter how irrelevant you feel they might be, it?s essential to disclose them to your insurer. Those with life-threatening illnesses will still be approved by some insurers, although it might be worth searching for an insurer who specialises in these sorts of cases.

#5 Luggage

Most travel insurance companies will cover the cost of any lost or stolen luggage on holiday as well ? so it?s worth checking how much luggage they are willing to replace should the worst happen.

#6 Excesses

This is a commonly-overlooked element of insurance policies. During most claims, insurers will expect the customer to pay a small amount of the fee themselves. This is called an excess. It?s worth paying a higher premium for a policy with smaller excesses on claims.

#7 How Many Holidays Are You Going On?

Wolf Run - Tiadaghton State Forest - Lycoming County

If you?re a frequent traveller, it might be worth investing in long-term travel insurance to cover all of your trips in one policy. Annual travel insurance is a popular product and can provide good value for a lot of tourists. If you?ve got two or three trips abroad planned this year, it?s certainly an option worth investigating.

Those who consider all of these factors are far more likely to make the right decision when purchasing travel insurance and not be left with any nasty surprises should they need to claim.

A more compelling conferencing picture emerges for Nimans' resellers

OSN - Nimans LogoThe acquisition of video conferencing and audio visual specialist Videonations by Nimans opens the door to a new world of reseller sales opportunities.

The distributor says dealers can now tap into an additional expert resource as part of a specialist group division ? helping them gain a bigger foothold in a multi-million-pound industry.

?It?s a move that confirms our belief in the importance of audio and visual solutions; rapidly advancing our capability and credibility in providing unified communications to a growing network of resellers,? said Chairman Julian Niman.

?Our market research predicts significant acceleration in video conferencing in the SMB market. The skills available through Videonations will enable our customers to boost revenue and take their videoconferencing proposition to the next level.?

Established in 2001, Videonations is a specialist video conferencing, audio visual and VaaS (Video as a Service) integrator, with offices in London and Manchester. Digital signage and display and projection systems form part of the company?s extensive product range ? reinforced by state-of-the-art demonstration facilities at both sites. Leading brands include LifeSize, Polycom, Radvision and Tandberg / Cisco.

?Videonations delivers a broad spectrum of high definition video conferencing equipment; from desktop systems for one-to-one communication, room video conferencing and telepresence for group collaboration, to infrastructure solutions for multipoint video conferencing,? Julian added.

?We see video forming an increasingly important part of the communications landscape and the acquisition of such a high calibre partner enables us to support resellers in the design, installation, maintenance and support of video and audio visual technologies. It?s a major step forward for ourselves and more importantly our customers. We?ve taken on the skills of all their staff that numbers over 20.?

Videonations? Managing Director, Ian Carter, is equally enthusiastic about the road ahead as he confirmed: ?There is less than one video conferencing system in every 10 meeting rooms across the world ? so there?s huge potential. Eventually we believe all meeting rooms will have some form of video capability. It?s about delivering a natural and immersive meeting experience, based on seeing and hearing people as if face-to-face. When presentations are made it?s as if being there. In addition the technology has got to be easy to use and cost effective. Here at Videonations we specialise in all these areas and through this newalliance with Nimans, resellers can take advantage of all the latest market developments and industry innovations.?

Novel system could allow broader screening for esophageal cancer, other conditions

Physicians may soon have a new way to screen patients for Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition usually caused by chronic exposure to stomach acid. Researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have developed an imaging system enclosed in a capsule about the size of a multivitamin pill that creates detailed, microscopic images of the esophageal wall. The system has several advantages over traditional endoscopy.

"This system gives us a convenient way to screen for Barrett's that doesn't require patient sedation, a specialized setting and equipment, or a physician who has been trained in endoscopy," says Gary Tearney, MD, PhD, of the Wellman Center and the MGH Pathology Department, corresponding author of the report receiving online publication in Nature Medicine. "By showing the three-dimensional, microscopic structure of the esophageal lining, it reveals much more detail than can be seen with even high-resolution endoscopy."

The system developed by Tearney and his colleagues involves a capsule containing optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) technology - a rapidly rotating laser tip emitting a beam of near-infrared light and sensors that record light reflected back from the esophageal lining. The capsule is attached to a string-like tether that connects to the imaging console and allows a physician or other health professional to control the system. After the capsule is swallowed by a patient, it is carried down the esophagus by normal contraction of the surrounding muscles. When the capsule reaches the entrance to the stomach, it can be pulled back up by the tether. OFDI images are taken throughout the capsule's transit down and up the esophagus.

The researchers tested the system in 13 unsedated participants - six known to have Barrett's esophagus and seven healthy volunteers. The physicians operating the system were able to image the entire esophagus in less than a minute, and a procedure involving four passes - two down the esophagus and two up - could be completed in around six minutes. A typical endoscopic examination requires that the patient stay in the endoscopy unit for approximately 90 minutes. The detailed microscopic images produced by the OFDI system revealed subsurface structures not easily seen with endoscopy and clearly distinguished the cellular changes that signify Barrett's esophagus. Study participants who had previously undergone endoscopy indicated they preferred the new procedure.

Southern honoring former NBA Player, Coach Avery Johnson

From Southern University?

Southern University will commemorate the outstanding playing career of SU basketball alum and NBA head coach Avery Johnson in a court naming ceremony Feb. 2 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

The ceremony will take place during halftime of the men's basketball game against Grambling. Tipoff for the women's game is slated for 2 p.m., immediately followed by the men. The game will be televised live on Cox Sports Television (Ch-37, HD Ch-1037).

"Alumni contributions separate great programs from good ones, and allow great programs to stay on top," said Dr. William Broussard, SU athletics director.

"The accelerated restoration of SU Men's Basketball in the past two years is due, in no small part, to alumni contributions--big and small--and none have been more significant thus far than Coach Johnson's."

Southern has also deemed Grambling game on Feb. 2 as "Alumni Night" and encourages alumni from both Southern and Grambling to attend. Tickets are available at the SU ticket office and are $7 for general admission.

Golf: McIlroy joins Nike in blockbuster golf deal

ABU DHABI: World No.1 Rory McIlroy on Monday confirmed he had signed on with sportswear and equipment giant Nike in a deal believed to be one the biggest sponsorship contracts in sport.

With the Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque lit up in the background, McIlroy stepped onto a stage wearing the Nike swoosh and revealed the clubs he will take into competition starting at this week's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in the UAE capital.

No exact details of what the deal was worth were released, but press reports have estimated it could bring the 23-year-old Northern Irishman up to US$250 million over 10 years.

"Growing up I always thought all the best athletes in most sports were Nike players and I'm looking forward to joining the Nike family," he said.

"I began testing the clubs late last year at the Nike factory in Texas and I could not be more happy.

"Hopefully now using Nike I have an even better year than last year. Last year was great winning a second major Championship and getting to No.1 in the world and this year I feel I can go to a new level and higher than I ever had and hopefully more majors."

McIlroy was introduced as a Nike staff player by Cindy Davis, president of Nike Golf, who indicated he had signed a 'multi-year' agreement.

"Today marks a significant moment for our brand and our golf business, and for the career of an extraordinary young athlete," she said.

"We could not be more thrilled with tonight's announcement.

"The beginning of 2013 for us is one of the most exciting times since Tiger Woods joined the 'Swoosh'."

McIlroy, who grew up in humble surrounds in suburban Belfast, insisted his switch of clubs from Titleist to Nike was not about the money.

"I don't play golf for the money as I am well past that," he said.

"I am Major Champion that I have always dreamed of being and I am World No. 1 as I have always dreamed of being, and really Nike is the company that can help me sustain that.

"So I play for Major titles, not the money."

Welcoming McIlroy to the Nike family were three of Nike's famed stars - Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, tennis great Roger Federer and 14-time Major winning Tiger Woods, who delivered video welcome messages to McIlroy.

McIlroy will face Woods in this week's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, part of the European PGA Tour with both players choosing the emirate to start their season's for the second straight year.

Like Woods, McIlroy was a boy wonder who was the world under-10 champion in 1998, turning professional in 2007, two months after finishing as the leading amateur in The Open at Carnoustie.

He had to wait until the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic for his first victory and oddly he has yet to win on European soil, all his successes since coming in the United States (five, including two majors), Asia (two) or back in the Middle East.

He finished last season with five birdies in a row to lift the DP World Tour title in Dubai.

It was the 2011 US Masters that put him on a new level in terms of fame and popularity.

McIlroy led by four with a round to play and was still out in front at the turn, but in a horrific back-nine meltdown he crashed to an 80 and ended up in only 15th place, 10 shots behind winner Charl Schwartzel.

The sporting world waited to see how long the mental scars would last, and got their answer two months later when he won the US Open by eight shots.

At just 22 he was the youngest winner of the title since Bobby Jones in 1923. A superstar was born.

Notre Dame football: Wood to enter NFL draft

SOUTH BEND ? The surprise element in Notre Dame running back Cierre Wood?s decision to leave a year of eligibility on the table and enter the NFL Draft on Monday is that it took this long for the decision to go public.

Wood, who finishes his career as ND?s seventh all-time leading rusher (2,447 yards), has been perceived to have had a foot and a half out the door since late November, when his availability to the media was truncated.

ESPN?s Joe Schad was the first to report the move had been made official. Wood was a senior with a fifth-year option. Family concerns weighed into Wood?s decision. Wood has a 1-year-old daughter, Braelyn, who lives with her mother in Las Vegas.

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL Draft is Tuesday.

"Having to make a decision like whether to stay in school or leave to pursue a lifelong dream of playing in the NFL is never simple," Wood said in a statement via Notre Dame athletic website. "I had to weigh many factors over the last month, but ultimately it came down to what I felt was the right decision that would most benefit my family.

"There are so many people I need to thank that have helped get me to this point. My teammates are friends I know I'll have the rest of my life. I'll miss hanging out with them in the locker room and around campus. They are a great group of guys and are poised for success next year.

"I also want to thank all of the coaches, specifically (head) coach (Brian) Kelly and (running ?backs) coach (Tony) Alford. Coach Kelly has the program heading in the right direction, and I'm happy to know he'll remain our head coach in the future. Coach Alford has been so much more than a coach to me. He's been a mentor and a role model. He's helped turn me into the man I am today.?

Schad reported Wood received a third-round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board, but hopes to move up. The 2013 NFL Draft will be held April 25-27 in New York.

?The predraft process is going to determine a lot ? how he works out and how he interviews,? said draft analyst Scott Wright of draftcountdown.com, who sees Wood going anywhere from the third round to undrafted.

?This is not a great running back class. There?s room to move up. He?s very talented, but that doesn?t mean it will happen for him.?

There are questions NFL personnel will have about the 6-foot, 215-pound Oxnard, Calif., product?s two-game suspension to start the season. And, after rushing for more than 1,000 yards in 2011, Wood lost carries ion 2012 to senior Theo Riddick, the latter now viewed as the stronger of the two pro prospects.

Wright said Wood would have benefitted from returning to ND for the 2013 season. He rushed for 742 yards on 114 carries with four touchdowns this past season. He finished his career with a 5.4 yards-per-carry average.

"Cierre has been an important member of our football team in my three years at Notre Dame and I appreciate all he did to help get our program back on top," Kelly said in a statement. "I wish him well in the future and hope he has a successful playing career at the next level."

Notre Dame, thus, loses its top two rushers, but has a glut of potential at the position for 2013. Sophomores George Atkinson (361 yards, 51 carries, 5 TDs) and Cam McDaniel (125, 23, 1) are joined by USC transfer Amir Carlisle, redshirted freshman Will Mahone and highly touted recruits Greg Bryant and Tarean Folston.
