WAVERLY ? A longtime Waverly School Board member will be appointed president of the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) this weekend during a ceremony at Waverly High School.
Sharon Manson of Waverly has been a member of the Waverly City School Board for 24 years, and she has served as a member of the Pike County Career Technical Center School Board. She has been a member of the non-profit OSBA organization for many years, having served on its Executive Committee and its Board of Trustees. In 2001 and again in 2009 she was the president of OSBA Southeast Region, covering 17 Ohio counties. She has also been the legislative liaison for Waverly City School.
?The OSBA is an organization that promotes all school boards and helps them with information and legislative. They provide services for searching for treasurers and superintendents. They have a lot of educational and professional development that they offer to school board members for training; especially new school board members. They have classes for them so they?ll know their role,? Manson said.
She said she understands the difficulties young students face today.
?I went to school as a non-traditional student. I was an adult, and I went back to school after my kids finished school. I had a passion for education, and during that time I realized the importance of adults and younger students working together and learning from each other. I think that gave me a whole new concept of how we could help each other,? Manson said.
Manson said applicants for OSBA president must meet specific requirements, which she did.
Manson will serve a three-year term, starting as president-elect for one year (which she has already completed), then one year as president (beginning Saturday), and followed by one year as past president. She will also continue to serve on the Waverly school board, and said it represents no conflict to serve both boards.
She called it an honor to serve as OSBA president.
?Not only our area, but all of southern Ohio, probably isn?t recognized as much as some of the other areas are. I hope to promote public schools in a positive way and to promote the student achievements that we do have. I think we get a lot of negative press and I think we need to focus on the positive things we are doing,? Manson said.
