Restoring Plaster Frieze - Painting - DIY Chatroom - DIY Home ...

I've stripped the old layers of paint from an intricate plaster frieze on the wall over the mantle in my 1886 Italianate Victorian home.

A couple chunks came off the sculpture; there seems to be a fabric grid (perhaps horsehair?) under the plaster. How can I reattach those chunks?

Also, I need to fill in some chips. Should I use joint compound? In general, should I sand everything smooth, or smooth it with compound or some other substance. I have no experience working with plaster.

Then I want to paint it without hiding the details that have emerged from under all that paint. Should I prime it first? Is there a special kind of paint and/or primer I should use?

Thanks.
